Is my baby constipated ?

We sometimes think that baby constipation is defined as having movements less often than adults. But that is an unreliable measurement, given that every individual has a personal sequence of elimination. Do not compare your child’s movements with yours.

A lot of bottle fed babies go three to four (3 to 4) days between movement. However they’re not considered to be constipated. You can say you’re baby is experiencing baby constipation only when those occasional movements look hard and firm in the diaper. Look also for bleeding from a fissure or crack in the an us resulting from forcing and pushing.

If your little baby’s movements are soft, do not worry. However, if you suspect baby constipation, consult your pediatrician. Giving your baby a little water (only when the doctor sais so) might help. For babies older than 4 months, a small amount of prune juice may ease constipation. Again, check with the doctor before offering it. Rarely, a milk allergy can cause constipation, in which case a switch of formulas might do the trick (again, only with the doctors approval)

And don’t take any other steps, such as giving laxatives (even mineral oil) enemas, of herbal teas without medical advice.

Newborn Constipation Symptoms is a post from: Infant Constipation Cure

When discussing baby and newborn constipation symptoms, we use the word “baby” referring to a child from birth to age four. Newborn constipation usually relates to babies less than three months of age. Infant constipation regards babies from three months to one year and finally toddlers are children from one year to four years of age.

Newborn constipation can be a horrific experience for parents who are going through this for the very first time. Even when it is your second or third child, it doesn’t matter. Seeing your little one suffer can make you feel inefficient and helpless as a parent.

Newborn Constipation Symptoms

The first step is to identifying if your child is really experiencing newborn constipation. As difficult as it can be, the child can’t express that he is constipated. Parents have many questions when they see their little baby in pain : Is this normal ? Is my baby constipated ? What are the symptoms I should be looking for ?

Infant constipation has been wrongly defined as having movements less often than the parents. But that’s an unreliable gauge, since each individual has a personal pattern of elimination, it’s not necessarily a case of “like parent, like child”.

Some bottle fed babies go 3 to 4 days between movement and it can be perfectly normal. Each individual has a personal pattern of elimination and this is true for babies too. Babies are not considered to be constipated unless those infrequent movements are firmly formed or come out in hard pellets, or if they cause pain or bleeding (from a fissure or crack in the anus as a result of pushing)

If your baby is extremely fussy with newborn constipation symptoms, you may want to bathe him or her in warm water. When your baby becomes relaxed by the heat you can massage his or her belly. Sometimes this will stimulate your baby to have a bowel movement. You should not be shocked if your baby has a bowel movement right in the bath.

When treating newborn, you should always consult your doctor first. It is possible to treat constipation in newborn baby with a little water and diluted juices, but when it comes to babies, you should always consult your doctor first.

Giving dark corn syrup (also known as Karo corn syrup) for baby and infant constipation, has been a folk remedy for hundreds of years. Today, you will find different views from doctors and parents on its efficency, but you might have to try different things and see what works best for your baby.

How and Why Does Karo Syrup Help Constipation ?

Dark corn syrup contains complex sugar proteins that helps to keep water in the bowel movement, making the stool softer. This is how Karo works for constipation.

However, it is argued that today’s commercial preparation might not contain these type of chemical components.

Do not use the lighter versions of Karo syrup for infant constipation ( if you are using Karo syrup as a laxative – it won’t be useful at all)

How do I give Karo syrup to my baby ?

Do I put the Karo Syrup in Formula or Water ?

You will hear many stories about parents using it in water or directly in the milk bottles. Both techniques are used.

Some doctors will tell you that is better to put the Karo syrup the milk. (formula of extracted breast milk)

The reason for this is the dark corn syrup has to be digested with the milk. The baby will absorb the sugar he needs from the milk and all the excess sugar will help produce a little “sugar diarrhea”.

How Much Karo Syrup in Baby Bottle ?

Start with very little : one-quarter teaspoon to one teaspoon (1.25 to 5 mL) in EVERY formula bottle or expressed milk bottle. See how this goes and you can adjust accordingly. It is possible that your baby will need this for a few weeks and even a few months. When the bowels are soft enough, you can slowly cut down on the Karo.

Some parents will use the Karo syrup only when needed, like once a week.

Toddler Constipation Diet is a post from: Infant Constipation Cure

Having a toddler is definitely a tiring and loaded job, but it will always give you joy to know that you are raising a child to live happily. It is very important to take care of your toddler, since your child definitely cannot take care of himself.Toddler constipation is a very stressful illness to have, so it is best to cure it as soon as possible.

You definitely don’t want your toddler to be constipated for long, so it is a good idea to start treatment once you notice that their stool is hard or if they have discomfort. Usually, the reason that toddlers get constipated is because of something in their diet.

Toddler Constipation Diet

In order to treat your toddler’s constipation, you will need to adjust his diet. Make sure that your child is drinking lots of fluids and staying hydrated. Water, juice, and milk are all great liquids for your child to consume so that he will stay hydrated. Dehydration can cause constipation, so make sure that your child doesn’t get dehydrated.

You might not be able to tell how much fluid your child needs in order to stay hydrated. The best way to tell if your child is properly hydrated is if he urinates every three hours while awake. This means that he is well hydrated and is drinking enough.

Another thing that you need to increase in your child’s diet is their fiber. Fiber helps your child digest better and improves their bowel movements. It is best to eat lots of fruits and vegetables for toddlers, even if they may not like it.

Find food that they might like that are high in fiber or you can also give them fiber tablets or supplements if they can take tablets. Good fiber foods include oatmeal, grains, bananas, and the like.

If your child has had a hard time going to the bathroom, then that means he probably won’t want to go to the bathroom often. Make your child sit on the toilet after eating so that they get used to going to the bathroom so that they can move their bowels properly.

Another thing that could cause problems is milk. Milk can sometimes cause constipation due to lactose intolerance from your child. It is important to talk to your doctor first about getting rid of milk from your toddler’s diet.

No matter how much you think your child needs laxatives, you shouldn’t give them laxatives since they are dangerous, especially for children. If you believe your child needs them, then you should talk to a doctor about it.

If the toddler constipation is related to a fever or any other sort of pain, then it is best to talk to your pediatrician to see if there is anything that you need to do or if there is any illness. Blood may not always be bad, since a bit of it sometimes comes with constipation. A lot, though, can be dangerous and you should definitely talk to your pediatrician right away.

Infant Constipation What to do ? is a post from: Infant Constipation Cure

7 Things To Do When The Baby Suffers Infant Constipation

Bowel movement is very important, even for babies. That is why if he or she does not mess up his or her diapers after more than 3 days, that should at least give you a hint that he or she may be having infant constipation.

Though the first thing to do is to bring the baby to the doctor, as a parent, you can perform certain things to hopefully improve the bowel movements of your newborn:

1. Know about breast-feeding

If you are breast-feeding your baby, then you should know that your child may not really defecate as often as you expect him or her to be. This could be because of the kind of milk you produce.

2. Massage the baby

If you think the baby is constipated, you can start massaging. However, do not massage the belly. Rather, move the legs. Lay the baby in any flat surface, though preferably the bed. One by one, raise the leg and move it as if he or she is riding a bicycle. You can do this as many times as you like, but be careful. If you are dealing with a newborn, the bones and muscles may be too fragile with very excessive motion.

3. Change the milk

You can also check on the milk. Certain formula milk may be causing the problem. You can look for those formulas that fit the age of your child. You can also ask for recommendation from your pediatrician, as well as from other moms.

4. Give yourself some time

Do not immediately panic. Just because the baby has not moved any bowel movements for days does not mean he or she is already constipated. Nevertheless, make sure you can keep close watch of your kid. Normally, if he or she ends up crying and annoyed for most of the time even if he or she has enough sleep and is well feed, it may mean something is wrong inside his or her body.

5. Check his or her diet

The food that he or she is eating may be causing infant constipation. Just like adults, babies also need plenty of fiber, which he or she can get from fruits and vegetables. There are specially formulated baby foods that contain a high level of fiber. Of course, you can always go natural by adding some of his or her favorite fruits and veggies such as bananas, raw tomatoes, and lima beans.

6. Stop the medication

Your baby could be taking some medications, and it is the one that is causing the constipation. Upon the advice or permission from your physician, stop the intake for a while and see if there will be changes. It will also help if you can ask for another kind of treatment, one that does not have constipation as a possible side effect.

7. Consider some forms of treatment

If none of these will change the bowel movement, you can proceed to using certain popular treatments such as milk of magnesia. This one can work as a mild laxative. It is safe to combine with a fiber-enriched meal.

Newborn Constipation Tips is a post from: Infant Constipation Cure

Increase Your Knowledge About Newborn Constipation – Newborn Constipation Tips

Newborns are so fragile that any type of health issue can always be a source of major concern for any parent. One of these is called newborn constipation. Nevertheless, with proper information of what it really is and how to deal with it, you will be less panicky and more confident in taking care of what could be a constipated child.

What is newborn constipation?

Also known as infant constipation, it is a bowel movement problem where the baby has not passed on stools for some time. He or she may also experience some difficulty defecating. There is no really exact timeline on when you can say the baby is suffering from constipation, although if the baby does not soil his or her diaper within 3 days after the last bowel movement, you may want to take some hint that he or she may have some newborn constipation.

Is it normal for newborns to have fewer bowel movements?

The answer is both yes and no. For babies who are breast-fed, they seldom defecate especially as they get older. However, any type of bowel movement problem is not good. Hence, unless it is a breast-fed baby you should at the very least be more observant of your baby.

What is the first thing a parent can do?

Like in any other health care issue, the first thing you need to do is to bring your baby to the physician. Only your doctor can properly diagnose and confirm if he or she is definitely suffering from constipation. The pediatrician can also provide the proper treatment or medication to ease the baby’s bowel problem.

However, you can also do something in complementary to your doctor’s medication. For one, you can perform leg massages. You can raise the baby’s leg one by one and move each in a bicycle movement. You do not do anything to his or her belly.

Should I change the baby’s food or drink?

Sometimes the constipation may be caused by the drink and food the baby takes. You may want to make a simple experiment. Try to identify the possible culprits and remove them from the diet. You may want to change your formula milk too. If the baby develops a more consistent bowel movement, then you have eliminated the root cause.

You may also want to introduce fiber-enriched formulas and meals to your baby. Fiber has a way of making the intestines work,

thus, removing whatever wastes lodged inside them. You will know how much fiber it has by reading the label.

Make sure too that you can increase the baby’s intake of liquids, preferably water or apple juice. This will hopefully force the baby’s intestines to work much harder and soften hard fecal matter.

What types of treatments the baby can take for newborn constipation?

You have the natural and the conventional treatments. The former may include the use of milk of magnesia, which is an effective laxative. You may also purchase enemas and suppositories from drugstores. Pediatricians may prescribe certain drugs like lactulose.

How To Help A Constipated Baby is a post from: Infant Constipation Cure

Adults are not the only ones who can get constipated from time to time. Some infants and children can suffer with constipation, particularly when solid foods are first introduced. Babies who are breast fed are not likely to suffer with the problem as often as those babies who are formula fed. However, a constipated baby should be given relief promptly, since their tiny stomachs and intestines need to function efficiently for good nutrient assimilation.

Babies may become constipated when the changeover from mother’s milk or formula is occurring. The baby might not be getting enough fiber so the entire system is sluggish. Care should be taken when introducing any new food. Problems associated with too many new foods too quickly can create issues with allergies as well as constipation.

Infants can develop constipation from a diet that contains too many dairy products. The thought of babies and milk seem to go together, but if the infant only gets milk, yogurt and cheese to eat, it can end up causing a case of constipation. If the baby is unable to have at least one bowel movement per day, you might want to take a look at the diet.

Some foods are known to cause constipation for many infants. These could include things like white potatoes, pasta, breads, cereals, applesauce and bananas. Oddly enough, these are foods that are often considered good to feed babies as they move toward solid food diets. Foods that are low in fiber are another thing that can cause some children to have constipation.

Logically, if diet is a major contributing factor for constipation, a change of diet is going to be of help is eliminating the symptoms. Without changing too many foods all at the same time, you can introduce more fiber through strained foods such as spinach, peas, pears, plums, peaches and apricots. Replace rice cereal with barley or oatmeal and bananas with prunes. Don’t rely too much on fruit juices unless the doctor advises, because other foods provide more fiber.

If you have hears of the BRAT diet for relieving diarrhea (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) you can simply reverse the BRAT diet to relieve constipation. Remove the BRAT from the baby’s diet to relieve constipation. This means you only have to remember the acronym.

Some gentle exercises can help to relieve constipation. You can gently massage the baby’s abdomen, moving your hand in a clockwise motion from the navel outward. A baby with constipation might benefit from a warm bath. The bath can be followed by a tummy massage. Another exercise that can help to gently bicycle the legs with the infant lying on its back. The bicycling exercise is also good for relieving gas.

A constipated baby is miserable. Long term health effects can result from a baby who is unable to move its bowels for a period of time of two to three days. In each instance, the situation should be discussed with your child’s pediatrician. Don’t resort to laxatives until the doctor approves and make certain that you use only those intended for infant use.

Baby Laxative For Constipation Problems is a post from: Infant Constipation Cure

A baby laxative for constipation problems can be taken in many forms. There are some remedies that can be used to relieve constipation in an infant or child. There are prescription choices, over-the-counter and natural remedies for this age-old dilemma. Before taking any steps to treat constipation, you should make certain that this is indeed the problem. A young child can have some natural straining with the stool, but if it is soft and if the infant has frequent stools there is no need to worry.

Here are some signs to watch for if you think your infant might be having problems with their stools. If the child is a newborn and is having stools less than once a day, it can be the sign of a problem. This is especially true if passing stools is accompanied by straining. It might also be a problem if the bowel movement happens less often than once daily. A bowel movement every other day or every two to three days can be a problem.

Dry hard stools are another sign of constipation. A baby who has to draw the legs up to the abdomen and grunt and stain to be able to pass pebble-like, hard stools. If there is blood streaks on the outside of the stool, this can also be a sign of constipation. All of the afore-mentioned characteristics should be discussed with your pediatrician or family doctor. He or she will be able to tell you whether or not the symptoms reflect a problem, and if so, what the preferred form of treatment is.

There are some natural forms of laxatives for babies such as apple juice. Apple juice has a very mild diuretic effect. Apricots, pears, prunes and plums can also be helpful when trying to soften an infant’s stool. Giving these in a diluted juice form is a good way to help the bowel to move. As a child gets older, treat constipation by avoiding foods such as bananas or rice for a while. You may want to try feeding the child a barley cereal and pureed pears.

Not getting enough water is a major cause of constipation. Giving an infant at least one extra bottle of water a day will help to ease the strain that constipation can cause. Diluting juices and milk may also be ways to get more liquid into the baby’s system. Teaching an infant to like water is an important thing for your baby to learn.

Glycerin suppositories are one of the most used ways to combat constipation in babies. These suppositories are not habit forming and are free of any harsh chemicals. The glycerin suppository can be cut down in size for the newborn. If you find that a glycerin suppository is not enough you can get them with a laxative in them. These are for very resistant problems.

Changing a baby’s formula maybe one of the simplest ways to combat infant constipation. It make take experimentation with various brands or products until you find one that helps. There are many different ones on the market so there is sure to be one that will be effective for the infant.

If none of these seem to work well for your infant, as a last resort you may need to use an enema. These are available over-the-counter. They can be used by following the directions. Try these when other options have failed and your child remains miserable. Use of a baby laxative for constipation problems should be discussed with your pediatrician.
